Road Safety Awareness Campaign

Road safety is concerned with reducing the numbers and the consequences of accidents on the roads. “Safety for all” especially for our children travelling to schools and back is of prime importance to the Delhi police. So, in order to achieve this objectives the Transport Department, Government of NCT – Delhi planned that more and more organizations should step forward to work with them in making Delhi roads safer for the coming generations. Thus the Transport Department, Government of NCT Delhi has appointed the Indian Environmental Society as an implementing agency to organize road safety awareness programmes to sensitize the school children on the road safety rules and regulations.

Programmes

With the passage of time the roads of Delhi has become more and more congested and busy due to the constant increase in the numbers of vehicles running on these roads. Everybody is in hurry to reach their destination and no one bothers to follow the traffic rules. This has increased the number of accidents on the roads of Delhi. Most of these accidents take place due to the lack of knowledge about the various traffic rules among the general public and the children.

So, there is an immediate need to sensitize the local community as well as school community (particularly students) about the road safety measures in order to overcome the risk of accidents. The easiest methods to incorporate the concept of road safety among masses include the awareness among the masses, especially among the students/ children (as students are the broadest medium to disseminate the information among masses) to avoid accidents on the roads.

Keeping in view the above said points and in order to sensitize the School Children about Road Safety Measures, Department of Transport, Government of NCT of Delhi, has assigned the task of organizing the Road Safety Awareness Programme to various organizations, including the Indian Environmental Society.

As a part of Road Safety Awareness Programme, Indian Environmental Society has organized a “Road Safety Awareness Programmes’’ in collaboration with Department of Transport, Government of N.C.T. of Delhi The Indian Environmental Society has organized two different programmes, as a part of the project, based on the following target groups.

  • School Community (Students and Teachers)
  • Local Community (General masses)

The aim of the programme is to sensitize and create awareness among the School Community as well as local community about the Road Safety Measures.

Achievements

Indian Environmental has organised two Road Safety Awareness Programmes, one at the school level and other at the community level. These programmes were attended by school students and teachers of different schools of Delhi as well as by the local masses.

The Society has organized Nukkad Natak (both for school as well as for local community), which was performed by a team called STEPS. The team was full of ideas that encourage the participants to take a lively interest in the programme. They were able to convey the message effectively about the Road Safety. The students and local masses actively participated through a simple Question-Answer Session about the Road Safety norms. While performing, they demonstrated in a very simple and effective manner the various rules and measures on Road Safety to be adopted.

Indian Environmental Society developed a Poster on “ROAD SAFETY IS NO ACCIDENT’’ and a Cap with a slogan “Life is Precious, Obey traffic rules”. These posters and caps were distributed among the participants during the programme.
